The theme for this year's Green Screen Environmental Film Festival was PERSPECTIVE. It represented a call to pause and look critically at our landscape, locally, regionally and internationally, with the dual lenses of climate change action and adaptation.
If you’ve got a co-worker from any one of the Caribbean Islands, who has family from the Caribbean diaspora, or you want to take him a piece of the Caribbean with you, absolutely do not purchase a floral print t-shirt or a beach board. There’s much more authenticity that the Caribbean has to offer that anyone, tourist or native, can appreciate during the season.
We want to ensure that our children can find creative ways to show pride in their brown skin and African heritage, for generations to come.
Paradise is not so much of a far fetched idea when you've set your eyes on the most beautiful beach. However, one can argue that Gabriela’s reaction was emotionally-charged due to how taxing the issue surrounding her identity and how she chooses to portray herself as a black woman is. It cannot be said that race is being unnecessarily brought up when the model’s desire to embody and represent black empowerment is the root of the issue.
In order to build a nation of today through the eyes of tomorrow we must first engage what was yesterday. Yesterday in terms of where we came from, who we are and how to use these findings as a mechanism to empower and change where, as a nation, we are heading.
